Founded in 1892, La Porte, French for "the doorway or the gateway," was rightfully named; for it sits on the shore of Trinity Bay looking out onto Galveston Bay. Today the community realizes on the ship channel and other chemical and petroleum industries to support their economy and residents. However in La Porte's beginning years it was a tourist mecca! With its' stunning Sylvan Beach and Artesia hotel,  visitors flocked to La Porte for fun in the sun and dancing to the tunes from the big Band era. Today visitors can still enjoy La Porte's numerous parks, recreational areas, top notch golf course, wave pool, 2 public fishing piers, seasonal festivals such as Sylvan Beach Day, the Houston Yacht Club, Lomax Arena, and fine local restaurants and shops.
